Autism (ASD)

A functional medicine approach to supporting autism—addressing root causes, optimising nutrition, and enhancing well-being

Book a Discovery Call

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that affects communication, behaviour, and social interactions. At the London Clinic of Nutrition, we take a functional medicine approach to autism treatment, addressing the root causes and supporting overall health through personalised nutritional and lifestyle interventions.

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong condition that affects how individuals communicate, interact with others, and process sensory information. Autism is referred to as a ‘spectrum’ because it varies widely in severity and presentation. Some individuals may have mild symptoms, while others require significant support in daily life.

While the exact cause of autism remains unknown, research suggests a combination of genetic, environmental, and gut health factors play a role in its development. Early intervention and holistic support can improve quality of life, enhance cognitive function, and reduce symptom severity.

Common Causes of Autism

Although no single cause of autism has been identified, studies indicate that various factors contribute to its development, including:

  • Genetic predisposition – Autism often runs in families, suggesting a strong genetic component.
  • Gut health imbalances – The gut-brain connection plays a crucial role in neurological health, and many individuals with autism experience digestive issues, food sensitivities, and microbiome imbalances.
  • Nutrient deficiencies – Lack of essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B9 (folate), vitamin B12, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids, can influence brain function.
  • Environmental toxins – Exposure to heavy metals, pesticides, and other toxins may contribute to neurological dysfunction.
  • Prenatal and early-life factors – Maternal health, stress, and infections during pregnancy have been linked to an increased risk of autism.

Symptoms of Autism

The symptoms of autism vary widely, but common signs include:

  • Social and communication difficulties – Difficulty understanding social cues, making eye contact, or engaging in conversations.
  • Repetitive behaviours – Engaging in repetitive movements (e.g., hand-flapping, rocking) or having rigid routines.
  • Sensory sensitivities – Over- or under-responsiveness to sensory stimuli such as lights, sounds, textures, or smells.
  • Speech and language challenges – Delayed speech development or difficulty with verbal expression.
  • Gastrointestinal issues – Many individuals with autism experience digestive problems, such as constipation, diarrhoea, or bloating.
  • Cognitive differences – Some individuals have strong memory skills or excel in specific areas, while others may struggle with learning difficulties.

Functional Medicine Approach to Autism Treatment

At the London Clinic of Nutrition, we offer a holistic, functional medicine approach to autism treatment, focusing on addressing the root causes rather than just managing symptoms. Our approach includes:

1. Comprehensive Testing and Assessment

We conduct in-depth assessments to identify underlying imbalances, including:

  • Nutritional deficiencies – Identifying key vitamins and minerals that may be lacking.
  • Gut health testing – Analysing microbiome imbalances, food intolerances, and leaky gut.
  • Toxicity screening – Checking for heavy metals, mould exposure, and environmental toxins.
  • Genetic testing – Evaluating genetic predispositions affecting detoxification, methylation, and neurological health.
  • FRAT testing (Folate Receptor Antibodies) – exploring whether immune factors may be affecting folate delivery to the brain, even when standard folate markers appear normal.

FRAT Testing: Assessing Folate Transport to the Brain

Folate is essential for healthy brain development, communication, behaviour and cognitive function. In some children — including a subset of those with autism spectrum disorder — the immune system may produce antibodies that interfere with folate being transported into the brain, even when dietary intake and standard blood folate levels appear normal.

The Folate Receptor Antibody Test (FRAT®) is a specialised blood test that measures these antibodies (blocking and binding antibodies to the folate receptor alpha). When clinically appropriate, this test can provide valuable insight into potential biochemical contributors to challenges with language, attention, learning and emotional regulation.

FRAT testing does not diagnose autism and is never used in isolation. It forms part of our personalised, whole-child functional medicine assessment, helping guide informed and targeted support.

2. Personalised Nutritional Support

Nutrition plays a key role in autism treatment. Our expert practitioners design tailored dietary plans to:

  • Support brain function with essential nutrients like omega-3s, B vitamins, and amino acids.
  • Reduce inflammation by eliminating trigger foods such as gluten, dairy, and processed sugars.
  • Improve gut health through probiotics, prebiotics, and a balanced microbiome-supportive diet.

3. Supplementation & Detoxification Support

Many children and adults with autism benefit from targeted supplementation, including:

  • Methylated B vitamins – Supporting methylation pathways essential for brain function.
  • Magnesium and zinc – Aiding neurotransmitter function and calming the nervous system.
  • Glutathione support – Enhancing detoxification pathways to reduce toxic load.

4. Gut Health and Microbiome Balancing

Addressing gut health is fundamental to autism treatment. Many individuals with ASD have dysbiosis (gut bacterial imbalance), leading to inflammation and impaired brain function. We implement protocols to:

  • Restore gut microbiome balance with probiotics and prebiotics.
  • Address yeast overgrowth, parasites, or bacterial imbalances.
  • Support digestion with enzyme therapy and gut-healing nutrients like L-glutamine and collagen.

5. Lifestyle and Environmental Modifications

A holistic approach to autism includes reducing environmental stressors and optimising lifestyle factors. We provide guidance on:

  • Reducing exposure to toxins in food, water, and household products.
  • Managing stress through mindfulness, movement, and sensory-friendly activities.
  • Ensuring adequate sleep and improving circadian rhythm regulation.
