Lyme disease is caused by a spirochete—a corkscrew-shaped bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi (BB) Lyme disease is called “The Great Imitator,” because its symptoms mimic various different diseases. It can affect any organ of the body, including the brain and central nervous system, muscles and joints, and the heart. We are the UK’s leading lyme disease treatment clinic based in London.
Patients with Lyme disease are often misdiagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis (MS), and various psychiatric illnesses, including depression, mania and severe anxiety.
Many other autoimmune conditions such as lupus and Rheumatoid arthritis are actually caused by BB and therefore people are stuck with chronic illness that rarely gets better with harsh drugs such as hydroxychloroquine or Methotrexate. Misdiagnosis with these other diseases is incredibly common as for example MS is a clinical diagnosis like Lyme disease and when MRI scans are carried out for suspected MS patients The Lyme lesions are identical to the MS lesions so a misdiagnosis of MS is made.
The conventional medicine model separates each part of the body into a different speciality and therefore often the undiagnosed Lyme patient goes from one specialist to the other and receives an individual diagnosis from each practitioner with no resolution to their symptoms. This is until they meet us! Oliver Barnett, Judy and Helen are three practitioners on a mission. This mission is to educate the public about the pandemic we are experiencing with chronic Lyme disease. We are diagnosing between us at least 5 people a week and it seems the number is growing each week. Some studies show that 100% of fibromyalgia cases are caused by Lyme disease.
Why is Lyme disease routinely missed?
GPs do not have the requisite training to look for Lyme Disease
- There is the assumption that you have to have a bullseye rash when bitten by a tick. Wrong! Only 25% of bites produce a rash.
- The conventional treatment is 2 weeks antibiotics but this will not address chronic Lyme disease at all.
- The standard tests of the Western Blot and ELISA test for the majority produce false negative results. Sometimes they are positive in acute Lyme though.
- There are no Lyme literate Drs. Practicing in the UK currently
- Lyme is accompanied routinely by co-infections such as Epstein Barr virus, Babesia, Chlamydia pneumonaie, or Yersinia.
What symptoms should you be looking for or what conditions could be causes by Lyme disease?
The list is endless but here are some really common ones.
- Muscle pain or joint pain that moves around the body on different days in different places.
- Migratory numbness and tingling, tinnitus, night sweats and chills
- An autoimmune condition especially MS, lupus or Rheumatoid arthritis and Hashimoto’s
- Pericarditis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s
- CFS, fibromyalgia, M.E
So how do we diagnose and treat Lyme disease?
- We take a very detailed case history using extensive forms (this will take you 90 minutes to fill out before seeing us)
- We use detailed specific Lyme questionnaires
- Comprehensive blood chemistry
- Differential diagnosis to rule out any other conditions that may be present
- Only then do we recommend highly sensitive Lyme testing from a specialist Lyme lab in Germany run by Professor Armin or sometimes Immunoscience in USA and Melisa in Germany
How do we treat Lyme disease?
We treat Lyme as we would any other condition by using the functional medicine model of understanding the systems under stress in the body and then improving these systems first such as gastrointestinal function, detoxification and immunity. Only after making sure the body is working at its optimum do we go after Borrelia burgdorferi and the co-infections.
We are the first clinic in the UK to offer IV laser therapy for Lyme as well IV silver. We also offer IV nutrient an immune boosting cocktails.
We also have to consider overlapping factors such as heavy metal toxicity, bowel toxemia, nutrient deficiencies, endocrine abnormalities such as thyroid and adrenal dysfunction, inflammation, environmental toxins, sleep disorders and mitochondrial dysfunction
Using the above approach we have been getting very good results with patients even with patients who have failed other regimens. We are also seeing the speed of our results far quicker than other Lyme centres.
We will be opening the UK’s first Lyme disease treatment London centre with a multi-disciplinary team which will offer patients a one-stop shop for all Lyme disease and associated conditions issues.
Lyme disease testimonials
Having had a very healthy and active life, in 2010 my health and well-being started to deteriorate inexplicably. I had an excellent GP who persevered referring me to every specialist possible, as my symptoms and problems evolved. I collapsed and spent two days in hospital, and would frequently catch a common cold and within days have pneumonia, but nobody could find anything wrong with me. After six years I was really struggling both physically and mentally, and felt my whole life was falling apart. With all logical avenues exhausted, my GP started thinking that I was perhaps suffering from Lyme Disease, but the NHS tests all proved negative. I was not at all keen on any extensive long term antibiotic treatment with so many downsides, so my GP referred me to Oliver Barnett at the London Clinic of Nutrition.
Following numerous questionnaires and telephone conversations with Oliver, he sat me down and plotted out every event and health issue or treatment throughout my life. Very quickly he was convinced I had Lyme Disease, so arranged a complex set of blood and other tests. These came back and confirmed I had chronic Lyme Disease and a host of other co infections, exactly as Oliver had suspected. So little seems to be known about this illness, but I was impressed by Oliver’s depth of knowledge, understanding and experience around Lyme Disease and dietary health. Oliver started to make sense of all my ongoing health problems, and I finally felt I could get a complete diagnosis.
Oliver quickly worked out a specific diet for me, and a host of nutritional supplements to start alleviating some of my problems, and working on the Lyme Disease in my body. I immediately found a positive effect, and was even able to eat foods that I had previously had to avoid, but now with no negative effect. I am now sixth months into my treatment with Oliver, and the results keep getting better. I really feel like I have turned a corner and have a new lease of life.
I have found Oliver and his team very easy to work with, very responsive and very professional. Following six long years of illness, after meeting Oliver I quickly felt that he could help me get better, and the results to date have been fantastic.
Last year when we first came to see you I was regularly falling asleep during the day, sticking with a diet that included carbs in the form of veg only - potatoes in particular gave me vertigo; my stomach was distended most of the time, and if I didn’t keep strictly to my diet it would instantly bloat to the point of looking very pregnant; I always felt uncomfortable and had little or no appetite; my body temperature was constantly low and my blood pressure was creeping up; I would get both night sweats and hot flushes in the afternoons and sometimes at other times, too. I regularly had arthritic pain and swelling in my fingers and knees, would get seriously swollen ankles if I jogged, lost 4 or 5 days a month to migraines, couldn’t tolerate alcohol, couldn’t read a book, and had mood swings and bouts of anxiety that would keep me awake at night.
Just to say that I don’t fall asleep in the daytime any more, have been able to add potatoes, gf oats and good gf bread into my diet, which has not only not made my stomach bloat, but has made me feel much better in myself, including restoring my appetite, raising my body temperature from the 34s and 35s to the 36s and sometimes even 37. I hardly ever get night sweats - or afternoon ones - anymore. My blood pressure has also returned to the low normal readings I used to have. I don’t really get arthritic pain or swelling in my fingers anymore and have just started back on the treadmill at the gym with no issues so far. while I still have odd bouts of arthritic pain at times, I no longer get arthritis and swelling in my fingers, which worried me the most Other than getting a migraine after my recent cold and sinus infection, these have been a thing of the past and I can have the odd glass of wine without worrying.
Whether it is the change of diet, PEMF mat or both, my stomach has pretty much stopped bloating altogether now, I have been feeling far more comfortable and don’t even take digestive enzymes anymore. I have read 3 books in the last few weeks. For quite a while my mood had completely lifted and anxiety disappeared.
I came to see Oliver at LCON following a positive test result for Lyme Disease and 2 years into steroid and chemo-drug treatment for Sarcoidosis that had made me very unwell. I was unable to come off steroids due to painful flare-ups of my condition when I attempted to reduce dose. 9 months into my treatment with Oliver I am now off ALL medication (with my Rheumatologists full support) and feeling 80% better. Amazing! We are now working towards being 100% well and I am confident that this is within reach. Thank you Oliver and LCON for giving me my life back!
