Intravenous nutrient therapy, or IV therapy, was meant to have been started by John Myers who was a Physician from Baltimore, Maryland who pioneered the use of IV vitamins and minerals as part of the overall treatment of various medical conditions. The great Dr Alan Gaby in the USA continued the practise from John Myers and he found that conditions that frequently improve included asthma attacks, acute migraines, fatigue (including chronic fatigue syndrome), fibromyalgia, acute muscle spasm, upper respiratory tract infections, chronic sinusitis and seasonal allergic rhinitis. A small number of patients with congestive heart failure, angina, chronic urticarial, hypothyroidism, dysmenorrhea and other conditions are also treated with the Myers cocktail and most showed marked improvement. Many relatively healthy patients chose to come in for periodic injections because it enhanced their overall wellbeing for periods of a week or several months. Based on the research done by John Myers and Alan Gaby and people since then, we offer nutritional IVs at the London Clinic of Nutrition to enhance patients’ health and help reverse chronic disease.
The rationale for IV administration of nutrients is that it can achieve serum concentrations that are not obtainable with oral administration. For example, as the oral dose of vitamin C is increased progressively, the serum vitamin C concentration tends to approach an upper limit as a result of both saturation of gastrointestinal absorption and a sharp increase in urinary excretion of the vitamin. The highest serum vitamin C level observed after oral administration of pharmacological doses of vitamin C was 9.3mg/dl. In contrast, IV administration of 50gm a day of vitamin C resulted in mean peak plasma levels of 80mg/dl. Similarly, oral administration of magnesium results in only a small increase in serum magnesium concentrations, whereas IV administration can double or triple the serum levels, at least for a short period of time. Peak serum concentrations of nutrients are also generally higher after IV than after intramuscular (IM) administration because the former results in more rapid entry of the nutrients into the bloodstream.
At the clinic we offer immune- boosting infusions similar to the original Myers cocktails but with increased nutrient levels. We also regularly offer vitamin C and glutathione IVs which are incredibly useful at improving detoxification, improving oxidative stress and reducing pathogen loads within the body. These IVs are also very useful as part of a comprehensive heavy metal detoxification routine or, indeed, detoxification of mycotoxins and biotoxins. A list of the IVs that we offer can be seen as per this link although do note that IVs can be made up bespoke for patients as and when required. Please contact the clinic if you are interested in having an IV or an intramuscular injection of B12.
